David Kaufmann is a Staff Analyst in the Department of Space Operations of Southwest Research Institute’s Solar System Science and Exploration Division. Born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he received a BS in Mathematics from Davidson College, and an MS and PhD in Astronomy from the University of Florida. After a postdoctoral year at l’Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris and eight years with Computer Sciences Corporation at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, he joined SwRI in Boulder, Colorado in 2002. He has served in a variety of roles over the years, from IUE Resident Astronomer to flight software maintenance team member for the Aqua, Terra and TRMM missions to ground system developer for Landsat-7 and CYGNSS to science operations for LRO/LAMP, New Horizons and Rosetta/Alice to dynamical simulation software developer. He is currently the Downlink Lead, responsible for science instrument data processing, in the Science Operations Center of NASA’s Lucy mission to the Trojan asteroids.
