William Ashfield is a solar physicist in the Department of Solar and Heliospheric Physics, where he studies the transient solar atmosphere with a focus on solar flares. His research centers on remote sensing observations, with specializations in UV and X-ray spectroscopy, image processing, and MHD forward modeling. He is currently leading the analysis of high-altitude infrared imagery of the solar corona captured by NASA’s WB-57 aircraft during the 2024 total solar eclipse. Ashfield received a BA in physics from Reed College and a PhD in physics from Montana State University.
